Our 2018 Youth Governor: Anna Sexauer
By: Valeria Lopez-Altamirano
Anna Sexauer, our Youth Governor of the 2018 Model General Assembly session plays a crucial role in making sure that things run smoothly as well as examining all of the bills brought to MGA. Our Youth Governor attends Broadwater Academy which is located on the eastern shore of Virginia. Her joining of MGA was to be expected, as her brother had been in MGA for all 4 years of high school and he talked so highly of his experience here. As a sophomore, Ms. Sexauer assigned onto a bill upon arrival at MGA, and she although not given the opportunity to prepared, is happy she was able to get up and speak to the chamber, allowing her to get our of her comfort zone. She very much enjoyed the thrill of being a bill patron and it made her want to continue the wonderful world that MGA is. Last year she was part of former Youth Governor Mark Johnston’s cabinet, and she is so thankful for that experience because she was able to see what she could potentially be going into, and learn the ropes from such a wonderful example of Youth Governor.
While getting to know Ms. Sexauer, she had admitted to being a very athletic person, and some sports she happens to play are basketball, volleyball, and softball. She does live close to the beach so she very much enjoys boating alongside the shore as a calming leisure activity. She did say one scary thing about MGA is that everything you say is criticized by people who do not agree with your opinions. Her best advice is to just stick to your beliefs, and she has done so which is why she has gotten so far in her MGA career. Some bills that have stuck out to her are bills both from her school but they are prohibiting the shackling women who are imprisoned while giving birth, and a prostitution bill that would not hold victims of prostitution accountable so they would not be imprisoned. Overall, Youth Governor Sexauer has proved to be an excellent Youth Governor, and we can't wait to what bills she passes at the Closing Ceremony.
