MGA's Stance on Marijuana By: Alex Ballard

The Old Dominion House Bill No. 64 and Commonwealth Senate Bill No. 2 are two bills that plan to amend § 18.2-248.1 of the Code of Virginia on the sale possession and distribution of marijuana. The Old Dominion House Bill, proposed by the Renaissance School, plans to amend the Code of Virginia via changing the amounts of marijuana necessary to be charged with higher level misdemeanors. While the Commonwealth Senate Bill, proposed by the Turner Ashby High School, will lower the fines and time served for being found guilty of possessing, selling, and distribution of marijuana.
The Old Dominion House Bill passed through committee with the amendment of those being in possession of laced marijuana with the intent to sell being a class one misdemeanor. After that amendment the bill passed with no nays. This bill calls for changes in the weights of marijuana that classify as misdemeanors. Any class 4 misdemeanor will result in a fine of $500 fine and jail time of 30 days. The classes of misdemeanors scale up to class 1 which results in $5,000 fine and 12 months in jail time.

Interviewing the bill patron Mattius Zuffoletti gave claims that the bills goal is to reduce the lives that are “ruined” by long sentences for a relatively low level drug. Mattius claims that the bill supports rehabilitation of those who are addicted to marijuana. He specified that this bill is meant to be helpful rather than harmful to those who use marijuana, as it will decrease the sentencing standards overall.
