HB12 Update By: Maddie Long

The bill was passed the first day. This bill discusses allowing veterans or active military carry armed weapons. On Friday, the house debated over the bill and was passed again. The question “Do you know the current voting age is in Virginia right now?” was asked. The bill patron answered correctly, “the voting age is 18.” A delegate stated that even though the age is 18, allowing our trusted troops to have armed weapons will increase safety. Another delegate supported this bill because if someone is old enough to defend our country they should be allowed to carry armed weapons to defend their selves and others. A young lady stood up and stated she was not in favor of this bill because, “the simple fact that more people with guns isn’t going to solve anything.”
The Deputy Clerk, Riley Jones from Central High School, discussed her opinion on this bill. She stated “I am in support of 18-21 year olds being able to get a concealed carry permit early. If they are able to risk their lives for this country, they should be able to protect themselves if they so choose. I think House Bill #12 and feel that it will be a good addition to the current Virginia gun laws.”
