Each year
at MGA, participants have the opportunity to go out of their comfort zones and
run for a major role in next year’s assembly. Once making the decision to run
for a position, the candidates then spend the months preceding MGA preparing
for their elections. Thursday, the first night of MGA, the candidates each
present their speeches and attempt to persuade the audience to vote for them.
The top contenders then move on to the final elections held on Friday night
along with the Youth Governor’s Inaugural Ball. The final votes are hastily
counted that night, to then be announced the following morning.
The
uppermost position available to attendees is the notable role of the Youth
Governor. The Youth Governor is the presiding officer over everything, all of
MGA. Their main role is to review all the bills, which this year there are 51
total, and determine if they pass. The Lieutenant Governor reviews the bills
before the Youth Governor, but they have the final ruling to sign off or veto
each bill. This year’s Youth Governor was Anna Sexauer, when asked her advice
for nexts year’s officers her reply was, “don’t hold back”, she suggests even
if you are shy to step out of your comfort zone because you will not regret it.
The next
post available is the Attorney General, who is slightly similar to the Youth
Governor. The Attorney General reviews each bill deciding if it is constructive
and if it has constitutionality. The Attorney General works with the Youth
Governor to ascertain what is going to benefit their community the most.
The
Lieutenant Governor as well as the President of the Senate are each incharge of
a senate. The Lieutenant Governor is also the youth officer of state who is
next in rank to the the Youth Governor, and are there to step in if anything
were to happen.
The next
role in MGA is the House Speaker, who has a powerful job to carry out. The
House Speaker presides over the house, as well as the opening and closing
ceremonies. The runner up to the House Speaker presides over the other house.
Tonight,
at the elections and ball, students and candidates will finally be able to find
out what they have all been waiting for; who is going to be next year’s
officers?
